Inertial and viscous dynamics of jump-to-contact between fluid drops under van der Waals attraction

چکیده

When two small fluid drops are sufficiently close, the van der Waals force overcomes surface tension and deforms surfaces into contact, initiating coalescence. The dynamics of deformation across an inviscid gap falls distinct regimes (Stokes inertial–viscous) characterized by forces that balance attraction at leading order (viscosity, both inertia viscosity). previously studied Stokes regime holds for very viscous but fails less as becomes significant before contact is reached. We show subsequent inertial–viscous self-similar approached, with width decreasing $t{'^{3/8}}$ radial scale deformed region $t{'^{1/2}}$ $t{'}\to 0$ , time until $t'$ . behaviour universal generic asymptotic observed in time-dependent simulations. unique profile suggests new initial conditions coalescence after contact.

Dynamics and photochemistry of neutral van der waals clusters.

This review covers the field of excited electronic-state chemical reactions in small clusters. The clusters emphasized are those comprised of an organic chromophore that is electronically excited to initiate the reaction and of various coreactant molecules ranging from water and ammonia to ethers, amines, aromatics, alkanes, alkenes, and diatomics. The reactions discussed include vibrational re...

Thermohydrodynamics of boiling in a van der Waals fluid.

We present a modeling approach that enables numerical simulations of a boiling Van der Waals fluid based on the diffuse interface description. A boundary condition is implemented that allows in and out flux of mass at constant external pressure. In addition, a boundary condition for controlled wetting properties of the boiling surface is also proposed. We present isothermal verification cases f...

Periodic Structures in a Van Der Waals Fluid

A system of partial differential equations modeling a van der Waals fluid or an elastic medium with nonmonotone pressure-density relation is studied. As the system changes type, regularizations are considered. The existence of one-dimensional periodic travelling waves with prescribed average density in a certain range, average velocity, and wavelength is proved. They exhibit layer structure whe...

Contributions of solvent-solvent hydrogen bonding and van der Waals interactions to the attraction between methane molecules in water.

The contribution of solvent-solvent hydrogen bonding and van der Waals interactions to the attraction between methane molecules in water was investigated by comparing the potential of mean force (PMF) between two methane molecules in TIP4P water to those in a series of related liquids in which the solvent-solvent interactions were progressively turned off while keeping the solvent-solute intera...

The van der Waals interaction

The interaction between charged particles via the Coulomb interaction is one of the most important features in physics and is familiar to any student of the subject. The way in which electrons and protons bind to form the hydrogen atom is also well known and is a staple of any quantum mechanics course. However, less familiar is the interaction between such bound systems at separation R, which i...
